Monday 10 October 2022 (Opens 12:00 BST)

Location: Devon, Streatham - The Forum

Come join us at the Forum to kick off the BHM events for October, we will be writing what black history means to each of us on cards and displaying it around the forum, discussing our thoughts and expectations for BHM at Exeter. Come along to express yourself and meet new people!

Tuesday 11 October 2022 (Opens 13:00 BST)

Location: Devon, Streatham -DH1 Lending Library, Devonshire House

As part of our celebrations for Black History Month 2022, we are inviting you to come and discuss books by Black authors about the black experience. Come to our drop-in discussion at our community Lending Library. Whether you have a book you want to bring to talk about, or want to hear from others 鈥� you鈥檙e very welcome.

Wednesday 12 October 2022 (14:30 鈥� 16:30 BST)

Location: Devon, Streatham - Syndicate Room B, Building:One (plus online access)

This seminar is an invitation to explore African thoughts about inclusivity and belonging. Blessing Chapfika from Hull University will demonstrate, through Ubuntu philosophy, that a community is where different people meet and commit to accept and respect each other鈥檚 unique identity and ways of being.

Location: Cornwall, Penryn - Old Chapel Lecture Theatre

Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) Cornwall is pleased to present five films, which examine the politics of communication. Screenings will be followed by discussion. All staff and students at Penryn campus are welcome to join. Bring your own beverage.

Thursday 13 October 2022 (17:30 & 20:00 BST)

Location: Devon, Streatham - Devonshire House, M and D Room

This documentary directed by Questlove (of 鈥楾he Roots鈥�) takes an in-depth look at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival through a series of period footage as well as interviews with different artists that were present. Far less known than Woodstock despite featuring hugely influential artists like Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone, Summer of Soul shines a light on a major cultural event previously forgotten to time. Screened in collaboration with the UoE Business School Global Festival, celebrating Black History Month. Free popcorn with every ticket.

The cinema is located in the M&D room, at the back of Devonshire House 1, along from La Comida (The burrito place)

Thursday 13 October 2022 (18:00 BST onwards)

Location: Devon, Exeter - Exeter Phoenix

A rare chance to see this classic film about Black Britain on the big screen. With its fierce portrayal of the racism facing young black men and its fabulous reggae soundtrack, 叠补产测濒辞苍鈥� is a prescient view of society at the dawn of Thatcherism that remains just as relevant today.

Reggae 鈥榯oaster 鈥楤lue鈥� and his crew, Ital Lion, are looking forward to an upcoming sound clash competition with a rival sound system. As the day of the competition draws closer, Blue faces escalating pressures from the police and local racists and his life begins to unravel both at home and on the street. Eventually his sense of frustration and isolation from society leads him to drastic actions. Set and shot in 1979 South London, this superbly acted, coming-of-age tale brilliantly captures an emerging subculture and an important moment in British social history. On its initial release 叠补产测濒辞苍鈥檚 subversive spirit was met with bewilderment 鈥攈inting at why this British cult classic remains tragically underseen. 

Screening in partnership with The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, who hold the production archive on 叠补产测濒辞苍鈥�,  to mark Black History Month this film will be introduced by Dr Clive Nwonka, Associate Professor in Film, Culture and Society at University College, London. Clive is the author of 鈥楤lack Film/British Cinema II鈥� and the forthcoming 鈥楤lack Boys: The Aesthetics of British Urban Film鈥� and has authored reports on race and the British film industry.

Friday 14 October 2022 (18:00 - 22:30 BST)

Location: Cornish Bank, Falmouth, TR11 3EF

The night will feature a series of guest speakers, poetry readings and open conversation.

A relaxed evening in recognition and celebration of Black History Month, with no pressure to be as involved at all.

The night will end with a Signwriters auction: Auctioning handmade signs made locally - raising money for Falmouth & Penryn Welcome Refugees.

An opportunity for our Students of Colour and allies students to come express what Black History Month or the Black experience means to them by painting mini canvasses with pictures, patterns, words, or whatever you want! Drop in for some or all of the time. We will provide the canvases, paints, pens, etc.

CANCELLED - Professor Gretchen Gerzina - Black England: A Forgotten Georgian History

Join us at the 内射大奶 as Professor Gretchen Gerzina reads from the new edition of her classic book BLACK ENGLAND: A FORGOTTEN GEORGIAN HISTORY. The idea that Britain became a mixed-race country after 1945 is a common mistake. By the eighteenth century, Black people could be found in clubs and pubs, there were churches for Black people and organisations for helping Black people who were out of work or in trouble. Whether prosperous citizens or newly freed slaves, their dramatic, often moving story is told in this talk through the lives of several Black Britons.  The triumphs and tortures of Black England, the ambivalent relations between the races, sometimes tragic, sometimes heart-warming, are brought to life in this well-researched and wonderfully readable account.

 is a vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Morris dancer based in Cornwall, who believes in the inherent beauty of sad songs. Angeline鈥檚 homespun sonic aesthetic, deeply emotive writing and layered vocal harmonies are all stitched together to make small, tender, often dark stories in song. This Black History Month sees the release of Angeline鈥檚 new album 鈥淭he Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience鈥�. The UK鈥檚 historic Black presence is evidenced but not well known, and difficult to find in the UK鈥檚 existing body of folk songs. This album is the result of research into the historic Black population of these islands. It is a work of re-storying, of lives and of experiences, into songs in the folk style. This event is part of , a celebration of Cornwall鈥檚 distinctive culture and its Celtic connections.

Join Dr Ekaterina Kolpinskaya, Lecturer in Politics at the 内射大奶, in an interactive workshop exploring her research into the UK population's heroes and role models. She'll share her findings before opening up the floor to discuss issues including why certain individuals feature more prominently, and whether factors such as ethnic identity may influence perception. This interdisciplinary session is likely to be of particular interest to students of politics, social sciences, media studies and geography.

For Black History Month this year, we will be having our first HLS (Faculty of Health and Life Sciences) faculty-wide event, and we would like to invite you to join us in discussing Black health inequalities and ways to destigmatise Black mental and sexual health. The event will be catered (pizza) and our panels will include a wide range of brilliant academics, researchers, graduate students and undergraduate students. 

The event will take place on the 26 October 2022 at St Luke's Campus, South Cloisters 3.06. Pizza and networking will begin at 12:30 and panel discussions will start at 13:30. Transportation will be provided for students who need to travel to St Luke's campus (from Streatham). More details will be provided closer to the event, to registered participants.

Hear the hidden voices of the Windrush Generation. In this informative session Jasmin, a current student and member of the Students of Colour Association, will share her grandparent's testimony to explore the experience migrating from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1973, how their lives contributed to the formation of a post-war Britain, and the impact of the Windrush scandal. This is the first event in our Windrush series celebrating the stories of this generation. This interdisciplinary session is likely to be of particular interest to students of history, geography and politics.

How can what we鈥檙e taught reinforce existing power structures, and what can be gained from critically reviewing our curriculum? Join us to discuss the 内射大奶鈥檚 investment delivering a more inclusive curriculum. Using the 鈥楧ecolonising Geography鈥� project as a case study, we will explore what it means to 鈥榙ecolonise鈥� the curriculum and examine the innovative ways in which the Geography department is reimagining education.

Edson Burton, A Question Beyond the Shards

内射大奶 Digital Humanities Lab

Drawing upon numerous examples from Black musical cultures Dr Edson Burton explores the relationship between Black self-representation and racism. He questions whether it is possible to create reclamation of racist tropes, or 'traditional identities.' Inspired by afrofuturism and speculative fiction he argues Blackness is a project of new curation. Part performance, lecture and discussion, A Question beyond the Shards will be an opportunity for students to explore a broad range of themes surrounding Black identity, resistance and art.

The service is a culturally appropriate counselling service based in Bristol who provide help and support for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people. Their counsellors are trained and qualified in the same way as our own Wellbeing staff.
